Music Masters – Musicians of Change
“Music Masters is a music education charity which believes that all children deserve the opportunity to achieve to their greatest creative potential, whatever their background and whatever their needs.
We work directly with schools, teachers and the music sector to make this happen, and a core component of this work is our Musicians of Change (PGCEi) programme for musicians committed to transforming music education. This year-long programme uniquely focusses on nurturing and building participants’ ability to deliver excellent, inclusive group instrumental teaching. Delivered in partnership with Birmingham City University, Musicians of Change provides students with a broad range of professional, practical and academic experiences supported by a team of practitioners, academics and leaders.
This is where Ros came in – we engaged Ros to deliver a practical session for our students on Inclusive Practice, Young People’s Voice and SEND.
This session was part of an in-person teaching day focused around working with children with additional needs, designed to equip students with practical tools and techniques they could take away and incorporate into their teaching and classes, increasing their confidence when working with a broad range of students with a variety of needs. This is incredibly important to Music Masters as an organisation, and to our students as individuals, as it can provide really tangible and actionable steps towards more inclusive music teaching.
Several of our students identified Ros’ session as being one of the best, most effective elements of the course, and/ or a personal highlight for them. Music educators often find themselves in settings including children with a wide range of needs but without any prior knowledge or training on how best to meet and work with those needs, so having sessions like this and time carved out with skilled practitioners like Ros who have such a wealth of hands-on experience is therefore invaluable.”

‘I really valued the day with Ros Hawley…. I think on a personal level this really reaffirmed to me that I am particularly passionate about this area of work and would like to pursue doing more in this setting again. I used to do a lot but have done less in recent years and feel I would like to work more in a SEND environment.’
