In January 2023, Margrethe Langer-Bro (Associate Professor, The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, and The Danish National Academy of Music), invited Ros to lead a workshop and seminar with students on her practise as a hospital musician and in using live music in critical care contexts, as part of her research project, Healthcare Performances – artistic awareness, sensitivity and interaction. Students explored nonverbal interaction, improvisation and development of musically responsive communication techniques through a series of creative exercises, followed by time for reflective discussion relating to the sensitivities and challenges of placing live music within a critical care environment.
“ My students were all very pleased about your workshop and I really hope that we can extend our cooperation in the future. It was important for my students to dig even deeper into the sensitivity aspects of engaging in the ICU, and your workshop enlightened this aspect in a beautiful and very meaningful way.”

“In 2023 I got the opportunity to work with Margrethe Langer Bro in her project concerning musicians in ICU wards in the hospital. A part of her project included some masterclasses, where one of them was held by Ros Hawley.
Ros came to Aarhus and held a workshop with us. We were a group of around 10 people. Ros held a presentation and then we did all sorts of games and exercises with us where she had us using all of our senses in an intensive way.
I learned to try to sense the room through seeing, hearing and feeling. Lastly we were put in smaller groups, where we tried to improvise and play for each other whilst trying to sense the room in the way we had practiced earlier that day.
I left feeling very inspired, and when the time came for my bachelor project, I really wanted to dive deeper into the world of playing music for patients in hospitals, since it felt so meaningful and exciting for me.“
